This is a Soto Zen Buddhist temple located in Setagaya Ward. It is the Edo family temple of the Ii clan, the lords of the Hikone domain, and houses many cultural properties associated with the Ii family.

Despite being in Setagaya Ward, it is located in a lush green area, and a peaceful and quiet time flows here, enough to make you forget the hustle and bustle of the city.

The temple grounds are beautiful with seasonal flowers and trees such as plum blossoms, cherry blossoms, peonies,芍薬(Shakuyaku), azaleas, and autumn leaves in late autumn.

The rows of pine trees on the mountain path from the stone gate to the main gate, and the deep forest where wild birds fly around are also highlights.

     🛕

The foundation of Soto Zen Buddhism lies in Zazen (seated meditation).

It originates from the fact that Buddha practiced Zazen and attained enlightenment.

Zen refers to discerning the true nature and state of things and regulating the workings of the mind to respond correctly to them. By sitting, the body is stabilized, and by concentrating the mind, the harmony of body, breath, and mind is achieved.

The Zazen of the Soto Zen sect is called “Shikantaza,” which means to just sit single-mindedly.

Zazen is not a means to achieve some other purpose. The very act of sitting Zazen is the “Buddha’s form” and the form of enlightenment.

In everyday life, we tend to be swayed by our selfish desires and the surface of things, but in Zazen, it is essential not to be caught up in various thoughts and desires.

    Anamori Inari Jinja 穴守稲荷神社

It is said that when Suzuki Shinden in Haneda Airport was being reclaimed, a hole opened in the levee, causing a devastating disaster.

Therefore, it was established by the residents as Inari Daimyojin to protect the fields from the hole opened in the levee.

The enshrined deity is “Toyouke-hime-no-mikoto,” a goddess in Japanese mythology and the god of food.

As an Inari that protects Haneda, it is not only believed to bring good fortune in household safety, business prosperity, and the fulfillment of wishes, but it was also established as the tutelary deity of the entire Haneda Airport area.

Since the Taisho era, the dawn of aviation, it has gathered faith for air safety, and is also popular as a shrine for travel safety and aviation safety.

It is a 3-minute walk from Anamori Inari Station on the Keihin Kyuko Line and a 5-minute walk from Tenkubashi Station on the Keihin Kyuko Line and Tokyo Monorail, so it is very close to Haneda Airport. It is a shrine that I would like you to stop by.

  • Ushigome Sochinju Akagi Jinja 牛込総鎮守 赤城神社

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DiRM00bXE_I]

     ⛩️

Ushigome Sochinju Akagi Shrine is said that in 1300, during the reign of Emperor Go-Fushimi, when Ohiko Hikoroku Shigeharu, a powerful clan member of Ohiko at the foot of Mt. Akagi in Gunma Prefecture, moved to Ushigome, he enshrined the divided spirit of Akagi Shrine, which was the tutelary shrine of his home country, which is said to be the origin of the shrine.

It is said that the shrine, which was located in Tajima Village in Ushigome Waseda (now Waseda Tsurumaki-cho, the location of the former Akagi Shrine), was moved to Ushigome-dai (near the current Ushigome Mitsuke) in 1460 by Ota Dokan, who respected its divine power, and in 1555, it was moved to its current location by Ohiko Miyauchi Shojo.

In 1683, the Tokugawa shogunate added it to the list of Edo Grand Shrines and revered it as the general tutelary shrine of Ushigome. It was called one of the “Three Shrines of Edo” along with “Hie Shrine” and “Kanda Myojin Shrine”.

During the festivals of these three shrines, the floats and processions were allowed to enter the inner moat from Takebashi of Edo Castle and exit at Hanzomon.

After that, it was listed as a village shrine in 1873.

However, as the city developed, obstacles such as electric poles and streetlights were created, so the grand parade of floats was held for the last time at the grand festival in 1899.

Ushigome Sochinju Akagi Shrine is believed to bring good fortune in finding a partner, safe childbirth, and marital harmony, and is visited by many women.

The modern, glass-walled shrine pavilion was rebuilt in 2010 by the famous architect Kengo Kuma, and is attracting attention as a fashionable shrine.

    “Iwatsutsuonomikoto”

He is a god who was born when Izanagi no Mikoto defeated the fire god Kagutsuchi with his sword. He has excellent powers of wisdom, benevolence, and courage, and is highly revered as a god of industrial development, elimination of bad luck, and learning and arts, and especially as a god of fire prevention.

    “Akagihimemikoto”

She is said to be the daughter of the Oko family, and the former betto (head priest) was Tendai sect Toeizan Kan’eiji Temple, Akagisan Enmyoin Tokakuji (described as Tokakuji in the Edo Meisho Zue), and the local Buddha of the temple was a Jizo Bodhisattva in riding posture.

In the days when Shinto and Buddhism were mixed, it was said that the image of Akagi Daimyojin was distributed from Tokakuji to the parishioners, and it is still occasionally seen in old houses in the parish. Therefore, although it is not related to “Iwatsutsuonomikoto”, it is enshrined together.
