Kameido Tenjinsha, which enshrines Sugawara Michizane, is widely and affectionately known as “Kameido Tenjin” or “Kameido Tenmangu.”

In ancient times, it was called “Tosaijingu Tenmangu” or “Kameido Saijingu Tenmangu,” in comparison to Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine in Kyushu, which was the head shrine, but in the 6th year of the Meiji era, it became a Tokyo prefectural shrine and was renamed Kameido Jinja. In the 11th year of the Showa era, it was officially named Kameido Tenjinsha.

There are several ways to write the name of the deity; in Kojiki, it is written as Amaterasu Omikami, and in Nihon Shoki, it is written as Amaterasu Oomikami.

The most common way to write it is Amaterasu Omikami.

It is said that Amaterasu Omikami was born when Izanagi, the creator of the land, parted from Izanami, who had descended to the underworld, and washed away the impurities of the underworld; Amaterasu Omikami was born when Izanagi washed his left eye.

Along with Tsukuyomi, who was born from Izanagi’s right eye at this time, and Susanoo, who was born from his nose, Amaterasu Omikami is called one of the Three Precious Children.

At this time, Izanagi instructed Amaterasu Omikami to rule Takamagahara, and she became the supreme deity.

When you hear the word “shrine,” many people may imagine a shrine solemnly standing in a place rich in nature surrounded by trees, but Hanazono Shrine is located in the heart of a bustling city with many buildings.

It is less than 10 minutes on foot from Shinjuku Station and has good access. It is one of the spots we would definitely like you to include when sightseeing in the Shinjuku area.

Hanazono Shrine was founded in the 1600s in the heart of the metropolis of Shinjuku.

Hanazono Shrine has long been said to bring good luck in “opening fortune and success” and “prosperity in business.”

Also, it is particularly popular among people who do business in Shinjuku, and many people seem to visit every year to pray for business prosperity.
