Rikugien is a metropolitan garden located in 6-chome, Honkomagome, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo. It is a Japanese garden of the “kaiyushiki tsukiyama sensui teien” (stroll garden with a central pond and artificial hills) style. It is designated as a Special Place of Scenic Beauty by the country.
In 1695, Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu, a close aide to the fifth Shogun Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, built a secondary residence on land granted to him by Tsunayoshi, and created the garden there.
The residence was called “Rikugikan” and the garden was called “Rikugien.” The garden name was derived from the “Rikugi” (Six Classics of Poetry) in the “Classic of Poetry” (Shi Jing).
Rikugien’s cherry blossom season illumination event, “Spring Night Rikugien Special Nighttime Viewing,” is a popular spring tradition.
The garden is specially opened at night, when it is normally closed, and various spots, such as the weeping cherry tree, Nakanoshima (central island), Ginka-tei ruins, and Suiko-e, are illuminated, with a focus on the weeping cherry tree.
The weeping cherry tree, which is a symbol of Rikugien, is about 15 meters tall and 20 meters wide, and its appearance floating in the night sky is truly spectacular. There are also events where you can enjoy the atmosphere of a spring night, such as projection mapping on the earthen walls built during the Iwasaki family era, and photo spots.
🔦
March 22nd (Saturday) – March 28th (Friday), 2025
6:30 PM – 9:00 PM (Last entry at 8:00 PM)
The garden will close once at 5:00 PM and reopen at 6:30 PM for the special nighttime viewing.
There are two types of nighttime viewing tickets: online advance tickets and same-day tickets at the window.
Advance tickets (900 yen) are only sold online, and same-day tickets (1,100 yen) are sold at the window and online on the day of your visit.
Same-day window ticket sales will be at the Somei Gate, which is the entrance, during the nighttime entry hours (6:30 PM – 8:00 PM).
If you purchase online, you can enter from a priority lane, so we recommend purchasing advance tickets or same-day tickets online.

From late March to early April, when the cherry blossoms bloom and are at their best, they are also lit up at night, allowing you to enjoy the magical night cherry blossoms.
The night cherry blossoms at Roppongi Hills, which are different from the cherry blossoms in the daytime illuminated by the sunlight, are fantastic and beautiful, and the way they color the night city is very beautiful.
Roppongi Sakura-zaka, a 400-meter-long row of cherry trees, has 75 Somei Yoshino cherry trees that were planted when Roppongi Hills opened, and after decades since its opening in 2003, they have grown into a row of cherry trees that covers the road.
The beautifully lit-up row of cherry trees at night is so beautiful that it makes you forget you are in the heart of the city.
Roppongi Hills is close to Roppongi Station, Nogizaka Station, and Azabu-juban Station, and offers scenic views full of emotion.

Ueno Park is a historic tourist spot that was designated as Japan’s first park in the Meiji era.
It is rich in greenery and surrounded by nature, and is characterized by the many cultural facilities attached to it, such as the National Museum and Ueno Zoo.
Ueno Park is also famous as one of Japan’s leading cherry blossom viewing spots. Many people have been visiting it for the cherry blossoms since the early Edo period. Among them, the large weeping cherry tree at the park entrance is the most famous.
There are actually 800 cherry trees in Ueno Park. You can enjoy many different kinds of cherry trees, such as Somei Yoshino, Yamazakura, Kanzan, and Kanhizakura.
Ueno Park, one of the leading tourist spots in Tokyo with an area equivalent to about 11 Tokyo Domes, is a famous cherry blossom spot since the Edo era and has 800 cherry trees.
The cherry tree-lined streets are famous nationwide, and many people visit every year to see the beautifully blooming Somei Yoshino cherry trees.
The beautiful cherry blossoms lit up at night are also one of the points worth noting.
The weeping cherry tree in Shimizu Kannon-do, called “Akiiro-zakura,” is famous.
The original tree of the Ueno Shirayuki Shidare is located in Ueno Onshi Park in Taito-ku, Tokyo, and is a rare white-flowered variety of weeping cherry tree.
The name “Ueno” was given to convey that it is a cherry tree originating in Ueno, and the name was also given by likening the white, pretty blooming flowers to falling “white snow.”

Chidorigafuchi is a 700-meter-long promenade from Yasukuni-dori to Kitanomaru Park.
More than 200 Somei Yoshino cherry trees are planted here, and you can see the cherry blossoms in full bloom from late March to early April.
The cherry blossoms, which bloom all at once from the branches of the trees, are even more impressive when viewed from below.
The “Chiyoda Sakura Festival” is also held, and the cherry blossoms are lit up at night, so you can enjoy the fantastic cherry blossoms reflected on the water surface.
Chidorigafuchi functioned as a dam to secure water in the Edo period.
It is said that the water source was secured by blocking the small river flowing from Kojimachi, and that in the early days of Edo Castle, the water flowed through the area between the main enclosure and the Nishinomaru to Hibiya.
There are various theories about the origin of the name Chidorigafuchi, such as the story that many Miyako birds gather there in winter, and the story that the moat resembles a plover.

The temple gate and the main hall, which had remained since the Edo period, were completely destroyed by fire during the war, so they were rebuilt in 1949.
The beauty of its appearance is said to have been compared to Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris by the writer Kafu Nagai in his essay.
Soseki Natsume also depicted Denzuin in his novel “Kokoro.” The current main hall was rebuilt in 1988, the second time after the war.
The main Buddha image is Amitabha Tathagata, and the Holy Kannon with Immeasurable Life is also enshrined. You can go up into the hall and worship.
Denzuin, the 12th temple of the Edo Thirty-Three Kannon Pilgrimage, is a temple that many people visit for collecting temple seals (Goshuin).
It is located close to subway stations on each line, making it easily accessible, and it also has a parking lot, so you can visit by car.
Goshuin can be obtained at the Nokyo-sho (Goshuin office) next to the main hall. There are two types of Goshuin: the main Buddha’s Goshuin, which has the inscription “Honzon Amida Butsu” (Main Buddha Amitabha), and the Edo Thirty-Three Kannon Goshuin, which has the inscription “Muryo Sho Kannon” (Holy Kannon with Immeasurable Life). Both are stamped with the three seals of the Buddha’s teachings.
In order to promote interaction with local people, summer Bon Odori festivals and other events are held in the precincts of Denzuin. When the lanterns are hung and lit on the temple gate, the area is filled with a solemn atmosphere.
It is also the morning glory venue for the Bunkyo Ward event “Morning Glory and Ground Cherry Market,” which attracts many visitors.

Located on a hill in Koishikawa, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo, Denzuin Jukyoji is a Jodo sect temple with the formal name “Muryozan Denzuin Jukyoji”.
It is the 12th temple of the Edo Thirty-Three Kannon Pilgrimage and is also called “Koishikawa Denzuin”.
It began in 1415 as a small hermitage called “Muryozan Jukyoji,” founded by Ryoyo, the seventh patriarch of the Jodo sect. In 1602, it became the family temple of Ieyasu’s birth mother, Odai no Kata, and became a large temple with many temple buildings under the protection of the Tokugawa family, where Kamesmatsu, the second son of the third shogun Iemitsu, was buried.
The temple’s name, Denzuin, is derived from Odai no Kata’s Buddhist name, “Denzuindono.”
It is located within walking distance of Korakuen Station and close to Tokyo Dome, but it is a quiet space that one would not expect to find in the heart of the city.
The address is 3-14-6 Koishikawa, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo.
