    This is the family temple of the Tokugawa family, where successive shoguns are laid to rest.

    It is a Tendai sect Kanto head temple founded in 1625. It was built by the high priest Tenkai, who was deeply revered by three generations of shoguns, Tokugawa Ieyasu, Hidetada, and Iemitsu, with the wish for the peace and security of the Tokugawa shogunate and the people.

    It is a prayer temple and family temple of the Tokugawa shogunate, and even now, 6 out of 15 Tokugawa shoguns are sleeping here.

    Ono Terusaki Shrine, located in Iriya, a downtown area of Tokyo, was founded in 852 (Ninju 2) at Ueno Terusaki, where Takamura-ko stayed during his visit to the east. It was moved to its present location at the time of the construction of Kaneiji Temple.

    In the late Edo period, Sugawara Michizane, the god of learning, was also transferred from Ekoin Temple to this shrine as a deity, and including the subordinate shrines in the precincts, as many as 15 deities are enshrined.
