There are only nine such places nationwide,

including Kinkaku-ji (Rokuon-ji), Ginkaku-ji (Jisho-ji), Sanboin of Daigo-ji in Kyoto City,

the site of Heijokyo Sakyo Sanjo Nibogyo in Nara Prefecture,

Itsukushima in Hiroshima Prefecture, Motsu-ji Garden in Iwate Prefecture,

and the Ichijodani Asakura Clan Ruins in Fukui Prefecture.

Koishikawa Korakuen Garden

It is designated as a national cultural property as a Special Historic Site

and Special Place of Scenic Beauty under the Cultural Properties Protection Law.

Only two Tokyo Metropolitan gardens,

Hamarikyu Gardens and this garden,

have received dual designation as both Special Historic Sites

and Special Places of Scenic Beauty.

Koishikawa Korakuen Garden

The name “Korakuen” was derived from the phrase “Sen Tenka no Urei ni Ure,

Go Tenka no Raku ni Raku”

(roughly, “Worry before the world worries, enjoy after the world enjoys”)

from Fan Zhongyan’s “Yueyang Lou Ji” in the Song Dynasty,

after Mitsukuni took the advice of Zhu Shunshui,

a Confucian scholar from the neighboring Ming Dynasty who had fled to Japan.

This phrase teaches the ethics of rulers, which Mitsukuni adopted as his political creed.

Koishikawa Korakuen Garden

The “Oizumi Pond” at the center and many other ponds

in the garden were supplied by the Kanda Aqueduct in the Edo period.

It was rare for an aqueduct to run through a samurai residence,

and traces of it can still be seen at the “Kanda Aqueduct Site” today.

The garden style with a central pond,

a strolling garden,

was a pioneer among Edo daimyo gardens

and had a significant influence on later daimyo gardens.

Koishikawa Korakuen Garden

The garden features a “strolling-style hill and pond garden” where diverse landscapes unfold, with the “Oizumi Pond” at the center representing the “sea” scenery. Surrounding it are connected “mountain,” “river,” and “rural (village)” sceneries.

Koishikawa Korakuen Garden

Utilizing the undulating terrain and natural forests located on the southern edge of the Koishikawa plateau,

the garden design inherited from the founder Yorifusa,

who modeled it after scenic spots throughout Japan,

was incorporated with Chinese tastes reflecting Confucian ideas during Mitsukuni’s era as added scenery.

Koishikawa Korakuen Garden

As a famous garden associated with Mito Komon,

Koishikawa Korakuen was originally constructed in 1629 by Tokugawa Yorifusa,

the first lord of the Mito Tokugawa family,

as his middle residence in Edo

(later becoming his main residence after the Great Fire of Meireki),

and completed by the second lord,

Mitsukuni. It is the oldest existing daimyo garden in Edo.
