Zojoji Temple, located in the heart of Tokyo and continuing to protect the tombs of the Tokugawa Shoguns, is a place of training as the head temple of the Jodo sect. It is also attracting attention as an Instagrammable spot with Tokyo Tower towering behind its precincts.

The Jodo sect, which has the simple teaching that ‘anyone can be reborn in the Pure Land if they simply chant ‘Namo Amida Butsu’,’ was founded in 1175 when its founder, Honen, was influenced by the ideas of the Chinese monk Shandao.

In the main hall of Zojoji Temple, the ‘Great Hall’, the principal image ‘Wooden Amida Nyorai Statue’ is enshrined in the center, and Honen Shonin and Zen Master Shandao are seated on either side of it.

The view of the temple and Tokyo Tower together might give you the feeling of time-traveling between Edo and Tokyo.

     🌸

This temple is located in Taito Ward, Tokyo, and is currently the head temple of the Sacred Kannon (Sho-Kannon) sect.

It is the oldest temple in Tokyo, with a history spanning nearly 1400 years. Known as “Asakusa Kannon,” it has gathered the faith of common people and became a central hub for the development of Edo culture.

Today, it is a major tourist attraction representing Tokyo, visited by many people from both Japan and abroad.

In the spring, 50 cherry blossom trees beautifully bloom, coloring the Nakamise and the temple grounds along the Omotesando approach.

Beyond the Kaminarimon Gate, which is a symbol of Asakusa, the Nakamise-dori street continues, lined with various shops such as restaurants, retro Japanese goods stores, and toy stores, offering a lively atmosphere in the spring.

Every year on April 8th, the “Bussho-e” ceremony is held to celebrate the birth of Shakyamuni, the founder of Buddhism.

Also known as the “Flower Festival,” visitors can be seen pouring sweet tea onto a small statue of the infant Buddha placed in the “Hana-mido” (flower pavilion) located in the outer sanctuary of the main hall and along the temple approach. The approach is bustling with many visitors throughout the day.

  • Denzuin(傳通院)

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTKwr3HuE-Q]

    🛕

The temple gate and the main hall, which had remained since the Edo period, were completely destroyed by fire during the war, so they were rebuilt in 1949.

The beauty of its appearance is said to have been compared to Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris by the writer Kafu Nagai in his essay.

Soseki Natsume also depicted Denzuin in his novel “Kokoro.” The current main hall was rebuilt in 1988, the second time after the war.

The main Buddha image is Amitabha Tathagata, and the Holy Kannon with Immeasurable Life is also enshrined. You can go up into the hall and worship.

Denzuin, the 12th temple of the Edo Thirty-Three Kannon Pilgrimage, is a temple that many people visit for collecting temple seals (Goshuin).

It is located close to subway stations on each line, making it easily accessible, and it also has a parking lot, so you can visit by car.

Goshuin can be obtained at the Nokyo-sho (Goshuin office) next to the main hall. There are two types of Goshuin: the main Buddha’s Goshuin, which has the inscription “Honzon Amida Butsu” (Main Buddha Amitabha), and the Edo Thirty-Three Kannon Goshuin, which has the inscription “Muryo Sho Kannon” (Holy Kannon with Immeasurable Life). Both are stamped with the three seals of the Buddha’s teachings.

In order to promote interaction with local people, summer Bon Odori festivals and other events are held in the precincts of Denzuin. When the lanterns are hung and lit on the temple gate, the area is filled with a solemn atmosphere.

It is also the morning glory venue for the Bunkyo Ward event “Morning Glory and Ground Cherry Market,” which attracts many visitors.

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abEZjvlSdgk]

     🛕

Located on a hill in Koishikawa, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo, Denzuin Jukyoji is a Jodo sect temple with the formal name “Muryozan Denzuin Jukyoji”.

It is the 12th temple of the Edo Thirty-Three Kannon Pilgrimage and is also called “Koishikawa Denzuin”.

It began in 1415 as a small hermitage called “Muryozan Jukyoji,” founded by Ryoyo, the seventh patriarch of the Jodo sect. In 1602, it became the family temple of Ieyasu’s birth mother, Odai no Kata, and became a large temple with many temple buildings under the protection of the Tokugawa family, where Kamesmatsu, the second son of the third shogun Iemitsu, was buried.

The temple’s name, Denzuin, is derived from Odai no Kata’s Buddhist name, “Denzuindono.”

It is located within walking distance of Korakuen Station and close to Tokyo Dome, but it is a quiet space that one would not expect to find in the heart of the city.

The address is 3-14-6 Koishikawa, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo.

     🛕

Ikegami Honmonji Temple is a sacred site where Nichiren Shonin passed away on October 13, 1282, at the age of 61.

Nichiren Shonin left Mount Minobu, where he had lived for nine years, on September 8, 1282, to go to Hitachi no Yu for medical treatment. On the way, he died at the residence of Munenaka Ikegami, the lord of Musashi Province Ikegami (present-day Ikegami, Ota-ku, Tokyo).

The name Choeizan Honmonji Temple was given by Nichiren Shonin with the prayer that it would prosper long as a dojo of the Hokke Sutra.

After Nichiren Shonin’s death, Munenaka Ikegami, a great patron of the temple, donated about 70,000 tsubo of temple precincts according to the number of letters in the Hokke Sutra (69,384), and the foundation of the temple was built. Since then, it has been called “Ikegami Honmonji Temple”.

This was made possible by the meeting of Dr. Ito, who traveled to various Asian countries for architectural research, and Mitsui Otani (the then-head of the Jodo Shinshu Honganji sect), who formed an expedition to clarify the Buddhist transmission route and traveled the Silk Road.
